We've come a long way since 2002, when coach Lorri was quoted as saying "Velo Girls is a road club and we won't be mountain biking anytime soon!" All of that changed in 2003 when Velo Girls introduced weekly mountain bike rides at locations around Northern California. Our summertime Thursday evening ride at Arastradero OSP is one of our most popular club rides. In fall and winter months, you'll find us riding all over Northern California on Saturday mornings. All this riding could only lead to one thing - mountain bike racing!
2007 marked the formal launch of a mountain bike component of our racing program. Although we've had members compete in cross country and 24-hour events in the past, we've never integrated those as part of our team until this season.
Our 2010 roster is comprised of both new and experienced racers, focusing on both cross-country and endurance racing and maybe even a little downhill, too!
In addition to racing the central coast series, Sea Otter, Infineon, and a handful of 24-hour events, the team will be focused on encouraging more women to get out and try mountain bike racing. We'll be doing this through a fun sponsorship/mentorship program at the central coast series, along with a beginner race clinic.
Velo Girls is proud to sponsor the beginner women at the CCCX mountain bike series. Our goal is to support new racers and help them achieve their goals and have fun, too! We'd like to see more women racing and also more women returning for multiple races in the series.
